Organic Gardening is the very essence of sustainability. It embraces the intelligent stewardship of our land and natural resources. It is an understanding of the Laws of Nature and the reason why we need to be tailoring everything we do in our organic garden around these basic principles. We look at things a little bit different that we used to before we chose this path.
Organic Gardening takes faith! There are never any guarantees of success and this scares off some people. One may have great soil, wonderful heirloom plants and the finest irrigation system going but it only takes one severe thunderstorm to out a crop.
A lot of us have suffered through continued drought this year and some of us got flooded. This year, I tried to be as diverse in my choice of cultivars as possible to help mitigate the risks. While the new irrigation system has worked very well, the sun has been brutal! The jury is still out but it appears that it could be a bumper crop if goes well.
It is the thought of a bountiful harvest that keeps us dutifully tending our gardens and keeping a watchful eye for potential problems. Remember that we can't reap a harvest without first sowing the seed. If we allow ourselves t0 get too caught up in what could go wrong we are not likely to plant again in the Spring. We just have to take it on faith that everything is going to work out in the end.
