compost pile

by Amanda
(Long Island, NY)

In Jr.High school, I was assigned to a project that would help the environment. I decided to make a compost pile to make my own fertilizer. I sectioned off a small piece of my backyard and put some chicken wire around it, everyday for the next few months I added leaves, egg shells, food waste basically anything that had the power to decompose. It all decomposed to like a black dirt. That is when I knew it was time to put my homemade fertilizer to the test. I used it for my tomatoes and flowers and the results were great. I especially noticed a difference with my tomatoes, they were healthy looking and there was less rotten spots on them. 6 years later I still use my compost pile, organic, good for the environment and FREE!
